outlook web access - weird

I have subscriptions setup to deliver reports in PDF format to users email
address. No problem there. When the email is opened in the Outlook client,
the attachment appears as expected and can be opened. The problem is when
the user accesses their email using Outlook web access (OWA). The email
appears and even has the paper clip identifying the attachment. However,

Can they open other pdf-files from their OWA?
Any security settings in play?
Did they test their OWA on a machine they knew there was a PDF-reader
installed on?
I know that sometimes I need to download pdf-files on my computer before
opening them in my OWA. But I'm quite sure the link for downloading is there
when I open the message, though.

Outlook Mail on Cluster

Hi All
I have Sql2k virtual Server running in Active passive mode on Win2k3
Cluster.
Now my question is how do i configure the Outlook client on those nodes, is
it just a straight install on both the nodes and then confiture it with Sql
Virtual server?
Can i make the Oulook client to be a cluster resource

Outlook is not cluster aware. You can create identical Outlook profiles on
all cluster nodes but any messages 'in process' during a cluster failover
will be lost. Outlook is also not a service so there can be some stability
issues as well. I prefer using xp_smtp from www.sqldev.net. It is not a
drop-in replacement for SQL Mail, but it can be adapted or extended to cover
most of your needs. I use it on a cluster and it is extremely stable.

license for the copy of Outlook I will use on the server even though we wll

We currently have a two node sql cluster running SQL Mail.
At present we have to manually start up outlook so the mail client works.
I have been looking at the resource options and wondered if it was possible to setup outlook client as a resource and if so, what reg keys would I need to tell the resource to access?

Hi Adam,
If I get your question right, you are wondering if you could make Outlook client as a cluster resource.
Answer is Yes. I am not well aware of what Outlook clients need( like regkeys e.t.c.). But say if you want to make a simple application like Notepad.exe or Cmd.exe you could host them as cluster resources by making a resource of type "Generic Application".

If this does not help then you might need to write a Resource dll that could make the interact with the OutLook client.

My problem now is that although outlook will start and receive email as a cluster resource, sql email cannot access it, reason being it is now a cluster service it has to start using cluster services credentials, not the logged in user credentials....
Does anyone know of any way round that?

hey guys, i need your help please.
here is the scenario:

1. I need to return a data back to client (result set varies 20-10,000)
2. I only want to show 20 records at a time
3. To get info i need to display i need to join 10 tables

When there are small #s of records it works but when i get over 8000 then it becomes a problem:

1. The first version was:
Get all data using big query and return everything back to client and display only 20 at a time (not very proficient).
Takes around 15 seconds to view 20 records.

2. Inspired by 4GuysFromRolla (http://www.4guysfromrolla.com/webtech/062899-1.shtml)
Use Stored Procedure w/ server side paging logic to get 20 records at the time. I had to pass every filter parameter and stuff. SP had to sort resultset and return only 20 records i need to display.
Takes around 5 seconds to view 20 records.

I still think it's slow, i know this is a very broad question but is there any other way to do it, logically?

Wojo.You coud try running a few instances of the search in anticipation of the Next/Prev scenario.

While users are reading 20 in their window the application is downloading a further 20 behind the scenes asynchronously. I couldn't give an example. At least they wouldn't be aware of the 5 seconds if it took longer to read 20.

What it does roughly is that if you want page x, the inner query will select the TOP x * 20 rows (last 20 will be page x...

Then order by a key descending to get the last 20 rows..the reorder those by the key, so page 20 will be in the correct order to be displayed...

test it, let me know if it works for you...

Oh, and btw, this will only transmit the 20 rows across..you don't want to be moving large chunks for no reason...especially since data is fluid and may change at any time...|||Hmm,

I did and it took 6-7 seconds, which is not that bad considering almost nobody looks at last pages :)

It matters to me because i'm displaying total number of records and i need this number to drive my paging logic (ex. page 1 out of 12)

If you are concerned about performance NOW, then you need to look into indexes NOW. I wondered what kind of indexes you had when I read that it started getting slow at 8000 records. 8000 records is peanuts.

Doing a select count(*) to get the rowcount should not be too expensive. Another method is to select the rowcount from the sysindexes table.|||I should have mentined before but I do this instinctivly, you may already be doing it.

When you join yuor tables dont use * and avoid large text fields. can be quite a surprise how long they take.

Try a skeleton version of the query that just selects and joins the keys. Then work up to include fields you need.

client to connect to one of the SQL Server?
i.e. I am trying to connect an SQL Server from one of my
PC. In that PC I don't have SQL Client. I don't want to
install SQL Client also. But it is enough to use the OSQL
utility to connect to the SQL Server.

that is uses some DLL, but you would notice that... Note that you require an
SQL Server Client license per the license agreement to do this.

Anand, I believe the following are needed to run osql.exe (although I
havent tested it yet). Obviously from this list you will notice that
most are either transport files (part of the OS) and OS specific files.
They will obviously need to be registered with the OS.
On a fresh system you will probably only need to install the latest
MDAC and then you should be able to run osql, although not sure the
sqlsrv32.dll is installed by MDAC or through SQL Client install so if
the latter is the case you will need to copy and register this.

I'm having a small issue with OSQL. When I type "OSQL -S MYSERVER -E" , it
connects through TCP/IP, but on one client (that has DEVELOPER edition
installed), it tries to connect through Named Pipes, which is disabled for
the server that I'm trying to connect to. I checked the Client Config
Protocols and TCP/IP (2) is listed before Named Pipes (3).
I know I can prefix the server name with TCP: to force it to use TCP/IP,
but I don't want to do that. How can I get OSQL to connect through TCP/IP

Can anyone suggest why two client PCs on the same network report different
lists of servers using osql -L ?

BOL says the -L option 'Lists the locally configured servers and the names
of the servers broadcasting on the network.'
So... it could be that they really are on different subnets and yuo don't
realize it. But 'locally configured' servers is the more likely answer.
-L will show all server aliases hat are defined on the client using the
Client Network Utility. You probably have different lists there...

|||My colleague and I had also discussed the possibility of different subnets
being an issue, but didn't have the tehcnical knowledge to sound out our
ideas so we moved on and in fact checked out the configs via the Client
Network Utility.
The only difference that we found was a single alias on his machine whereas
on mine the list is empty and yet there are 49 servers to be found. Maybe
there's a different list of which I'm unaware ?
Inspired by a reply to a similar post I knocked up a quick VB6 app to use
DMO and list the servers. Unsurprisingly, I got exactly the same list as with
osql -L.
However, several entries in my list differ from that when we use my
colleague's machine.
Still, at your suggestion I'll take a closer look at the configs, Biran -

on UDP network broadcasts. There are different factors that play into

I have written an OSQL like replacement in C#/.Net 2.0. I am
having a wee bit of an issue though. If the SQL file to be run
has dynamic SQL in it (building SQL strings and then executing
them) then the command will fail - always. I think it has
something to do with the nesting of the quotes. Got any ideas
on what would be causing something like this?
